If you are unable to draw a card, you will be referred to as “standing pat.”
Once all of the active players have made their bets, the dealer will shuffle the cards. They then place them face up on the table. A button identifies the nominal dealer. In a standard game, the button is a white plastic disk.
The dealer has the last say in deciding how to deal the cards. For example, some games deal the cards clockwise. Others have the dealer deal a card to each player. Traditionally, the dealer deals each player a card and then puts the remaining cards face down.
Another variation is the badugi, where the dealer issues four cards instead of five. Players can then draw as many cards as they want to, although there is no limit on the number of times a player can draw. These variations are popular because they give players a chance to create a winning hand without having to use their entire hand.
Most poker games are played using a standard deck of 52 cards. However, some versions of the game add jokers to the mix. Those versions are sometimes called wildcards. Wildcards are cards that can take any suit. Using a wildcard can make a five of a kind hand the best possible. Likewise, a pair of aces is now low.
